Cameras in a home daycare raise questions a center never faces: the cameras are in your house, the playroom doubles as your family room, and your own kids are sometimes on camera. These adaptable templates put clean boundaries in writing: care areas only, care hours only, video only.

What a home daycare camera policy should cover

✓Whether audio is recorded: video-only avoids audio-consent law and protects everyone's conversations, including your family's.
✓Who can view live: each enrolled family sees only the care areas, only during care hours, from their own login.
✓Your own household: note that your family members may appear in care areas during care hours.
✓Recording and retention: whether any footage is kept (live-only parent viewing keeps this simple).
✓No recording or sharing by parents: live viewing is not recording.

Purpose. [Program Name] operates in a private residence and uses video cameras in designated care areas during care hours to support child safety and parent transparency.

Camera placement. Cameras are located only in designated care areas: [list rooms, e.g., playroom, main-floor living area, fenced backyard]. Cameras are never placed in bathrooms, changing areas, bedrooms, or areas of the home reserved for the provider's family.

Care hours only. Live parent viewing is active only during posted care hours ([e.g., Mon–Fri 7:00 AM–5:30 PM]). Outside care hours the parent stream is off. Because this is our family's home, off-hours privacy is absolute.

Audio. Cameras used for parent viewing are video-only and do not stream or record audio.

Parent live viewing. Enrolled parents/guardians may be granted secure, individual login access to view the care areas live during care hours. Access is not a public link, is limited to approved accounts, and may be modified or revoked at any time.

Provider's household. Members of the provider's household may appear in care areas during care hours and are aware of the cameras.

No recording or sharing by parents. Live viewing is not recording. Parents may not record, screenshot, or share the stream. Access is for the enrolled family only.

Recording & retention. [If you keep any footage for your own records, state where it is stored, for how long, and who can access it. If not, state that viewing is live-only and no footage is retained.]

Disclosure. This policy is provided to all enrolled families at enrollment and is part of the parent handbook.

Does a home daycare need a camera policy?

Yes, if you use cameras during care hours. A written policy belongs in your parent handbook: where cameras are (care areas only, never bathrooms or changing areas), whether audio is recorded, who can view live and when, and what happens outside care hours. Family child care homes are licensed differently than centers in most states, so confirm specifics with your licensing agency.

How is a home daycare camera policy different from a center's?

Three things: your cameras are in a private residence, your rooms are mixed-use (a playroom by day is your family room at night), and your own family appears on camera. A home policy states that streaming is limited to care hours in designated care areas, and that cameras are off or inactive for parent viewing outside those hours.

Do parents need to consent to cameras in a home daycare?

Best practice is yes. Include camera disclosure in your enrollment paperwork and have parents sign a viewing consent before giving live access. What about my own family's privacy?

This is the big home-daycare concern, and scheduling solves it: with CareCam, streaming is active only during the care hours you set. Can a home daycare record audio?

Audio is the legally sensitive part: some states require everyone's consent to record conversations, which is impractical in a room of children, parents, and your own family members. Video-only (how CareCam works) avoids the audio-consent question entirely. If you record audio for your own records, address consent for your state in your policy.
